Grout takes a beating in every home, and over time, the problems start to show. Because grout is porous, it soaks up dirt, spills, and soap scum, turning dark and stained no matter how often you scrub. In showers, constant moisture can lead to mildew that keeps coming back. Las Vegas homes also deal with hard water, which leaves mineral buildup on grout lines. As grout ages, it can crack, crumble, or pull away from the tile, leaving gaps where water can seep behind your walls and floors. Even when grout is in good shape, faded or patchy color can make an otherwise beautiful room look dated.

Regrouting a shower means removing the old, damaged grout from between your tiles and replacing it with fresh grout. The old grout is carefully cut or ground out, the joints are cleaned, and new grout is pressed in and smoothed. Corners and the joints where walls meet the floor get flexible silicone caulk instead of grout, since those spots move slightly and grout would crack there. Done right, regrouting makes your shower look fresh and helps keep water from getting behind your tile.
The process is much like a shower. Old, cracked, or crumbling grout is removed from the joints, the area is cleaned, and new grout is packed in and wiped smooth. Regrouting can make an old tile floor look almost new without the cost of replacing the tile.
It's not a good idea. A thin layer of new grout won't bond well to old grout, so it often cracks or pops out quickly. For lasting results, enough of the old grout needs to be removed so the new grout has room to bond.
Yes. Grout colorants can change your grout to a new shade, lighter or darker, without removing it. The grout needs a thorough cleaning first so the color goes on evenly. If your grout is cracked or crumbling, regrouting with a new color is the better choice.
It depends on the look you want. White grout gives a clean, seamless look but shows dirt more easily. Light gray hides everyday grime better, and dark gray or black creates a bold contrast that makes each tile stand out.
There's no set schedule. Grout can last many years with good care, but showers take a lot of water and wear. If you notice cracks, crumbling, missing spots, or mildew that won't clean off, it's time to regrout.
In most cases, yes. If your tiles are still in good shape, regrouting costs far less than replacing them and can make your floor or shower look almost new. It also helps protect against water getting under your tile, which can cause bigger problems later.
The cost depends on the size of your shower, the type of tile, and how much old grout needs to be removed. Small showers cost less than large walk-in showers with lots of grout lines. Contact Bulldog Tile and Grout Cleaning for a free, honest estimate with no surprises.
For most cement-based grouts, yes. Sealing helps protect your new grout from stains, dirt, and moisture. The grout needs to fully cure first, so sealing usually happens a few days after regrouting. Epoxy grout usually doesn't need sealing.
Most showers can be regrouted in about a day, depending on size and how hard the old grout is to remove. After that, the new grout needs time to cure before the shower gets wet, usually 24 to 48 hours for cement grout and longer for epoxy. We'll let you know exactly when it's safe to use your shower again.
